With obesity in the U.K rising more and more people are being diagnosed with high cholesterol, brought on by an over consumption of fatty and sugary foods. Once diagnosed many suffers have to maintain a healthy diet and exercise to control their cholesterol. Here is some advice on how to control your cholesterol level.
Take and Make Note of What You Eat
If possible try to keep some sort of food diary, this doesn’t have to be permanently, but using one for a month or two when you first begin to control your cholesterol can help as you will be able to pinpoint trouble areas in your diet.
Find and Use Replacements for High Cholesterol Ingredients and Meals
When you are eating meals and snacks at home you have the advantage of controlling exactly what you eat and what ingredients you put into your body. A great way to lower cholesterol is to modify usual recipes to a low-fat, low-cholesterol version, which can be done with most meals.
Avoid Fad Diets

The key to losing weight and maintaining a low cholesterol is to take your doctors advice and stick to a safe, healthy diet rather then to fad diet, as this can that damage your health. Just simply follow your doctors advised diet and combine with an exercise routine and you will start to see results.

Exercise May Help to Ease ME
Tuesday, 22 February 2011 15:56:32 Europe/London
Exercise and brain training, according to scientists, may treat chronic Fatigue Syndrome, commonly known as ME. They say other methods used to combat ME are less successful.
Reports have indicated that over a quarter million people in the UK alone suffer from ME. Scientist are yet to discover the cause of the condition. Symptoms of ME include excessive tiredness, poor concentration and muscle and joint pain.
To carry out the study researchers analysed three methods of treatment and evaluated their effectiveness towards ME treatment. The study used the cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exercise and planning activities on 641 ME sufferers.
Results showed that CBT and exercise therapy were the most successful methods of treatment.
CBT was found to return 30 per cent of patients to normal levels of physical functioning and fatigue.
However Action for ME believed that the results of the study were exaggerated and previous results of alternative studies did not reflect the outcomes of this study.
The findings were welcomed by The Association of Young People with ME. It called on the group to repeat the study using children.
Exercise with Your Other Half to Keep Fitness on Track
Thursday, 17 February 2011 15:22:27 Europe/London
February tends to be the month when most of us ditch our fitness routine that we started up in on 2nd January. But there is a way that you can stay motivated for longer.
Fitness experts have found that couples who exercise together, stay motivated longer compared to when exercising alone.
Couples are trying out a wide variety of fitness activities from simply just going to the gym to adventure sports to even attending yoga classes together.
Exercising as a couple to bond better but also helps them to become more motivated which means they maximise time spent on fitness. The only disadvantage to exercising in a couple is when one is fitter than the other. When there is a difference in fitness levels, they tend to stop working out together.
People who exercise with their other halves are successful in sticking to their fitness routine because they try to impress one another as well as trying to out do one another.
Fitness experts are also seeing a growing trend in couples taking up dancing classes due to the rise and popularity of TV shows such as ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and ‘Dancing with the Stars’ apart from the fitness factor, it creates more bonding time between the two.
Long walks and trekking is common adventure and fitness works wonders with couples. Trekking is an easy way to loose calories and it is very effective way of toning up.
Training Assistant

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS at Erlangen in Germany have developed a fitness aid that helps you to stay motivated.
The electronic assistant consists of a sensor suit that collects information about your movements whilst performing your workout and transmits current measurement results to a TV, computer or smartphone.
To use the training assistant you simply create a personal training plan on the electric assistant and all of the exercises recorded once to ensure that they perfectly match the user's own performance levels. Then, the exercises can be repeated in the home environment.
The goal is to motivate you to exercise more. The areas of application include exercise programmes for senior citizens or patients undergoing rehabilitation along with my other training facilities.
Workout With Your Dog
Wednesday, 9 February 2011 15:23:59 Europe/London
According to a recently published study, those who run with their dog tend to stick to their exercise routine and have longer exercise sessions compared to those who exercise alone.
If you have a dog and are planning on taking them on a run or powerwalk with you here’s a few tips to help you along the way.
Dogs are a bit like us, they like having a regular routine. If you start your exercise routine by taking your dog out every evening, they will soon get know when that it’s exercise time every evening. The best thing to do is to just take them along with you once or twice a week.
When it comes to exercise capabilities dogs are quite similar to humans. As with children, puppies shouldn’t perform too much exercise as it can affect their joints, this goes for overweight dogs as well. Moderation is the key.
Some people are reluctant to exercise with their dogs, as they are worried that they won’t be able to keep up with the dog. This really depends on the dog; some dogs will wait until their owner catches up, whilst others will continue to run. The solution is to train your dog to perform exactly how you want them to, this may take time and effort, but it will be worth it.
Your dog can also accompany you on a bike ride, by simply tying their lead to your bike handle. Although bear in mind that this type of exercise is better suited to a long legged and energetic breed of dog.
The great thing about exercising with your dog is that they really do make the perfect workout partner. They love to run, they won’t let you down at the last minute, they’ll want to go for a run whatever the weather and will always be ready to go and above all they will bring you a sense of motivation and ultimate camaraderie.
Janet Jackson's Bid to Shed Christmas Weight
Tuesday, 8 February 2011 13:40:10 Europe/London
After struggling with her weight over the course of the past few years, it seems that singer Janet Jackson has piled on the pounds once again. The singer who weighed in at a slender 120lbs just a few months ago, has gained 20lbs over Christmas and is desperate to lose weight for her comeback tour.
Like many of us “Janet lost control of her diet at the end of last year, then she went hog-wild on junk food over the holidays,” a source told American tabloid the National Enquirer.
But it seems Janet has been trying to get back into shape with a extensive exercise routine. She’s working out seven days a week, swimming, doing aerobics, kickboxing, running and lifting weights.
And she’s hoping that the nightly workout of performing onstage will help with her weight loss, too.
Her new tour is a ‘greatest hits’ show – and Janet is determined to make it her best tour ever, whilst looking her best whilst doing so.
Increasing Exercise Improves IBS Symptoms
Tuesday, 8 February 2011 12:07:14 Europe/London
Research has shown that increasing physical activity can help to improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
IBS affects between 10 percent to 15 percent of people around the world, and is typically characterised by symptoms such as abdominal pain, constipation diarrhoea or bloating.
Exercise has been shown to be effective in releaving the symptoms of IBS.
To study the effect of exercise on symptoms in IBS, researchers in Sweden selected 102 patients (aged between 18 and 65 years) to a physical activity group and a control group.
Patients in the physical activity group were instructed by a physiotherapist to increase their physical activity (moderate to vigorous physical activity for 20 to 30 minutes three to five times a week), and those of the control group were instructed to maintain their lifestyle.
At the start of the study and at the end of the three months study period, the participants ranked their IBS symptoms, including abdominal pain, stool difficulties and overall quality of life. While the group that maintained their normal routine experienced an average 5-point drop in symptoms, those who increased their activity experienced much more dramatic symptom relief (an average 51-point decrease).
The study findings suggest that even a slight increase in exercise by patients suffering from IBS may reduce symptoms.
Get Fit with Yoga
Tuesday, 1 February 2011 16:56:48 Europe/London
If your looking for a relaxing and rewarding way to get fit and get in shape then yoga may be for you.
Research has shown that yoga helps improve concentration, decrease stress, and relax muscles.
The great thing about yoga is it really doesn’t take long before you start experiencing the "feel good" benefits of yoga. But don’t be fooled as yoga isn’t necessarily a walk in the park, but you don’t really break into a vigorous sweat either. So if you want to tone up and improve your cardiovascular fitness as well, then we recommend you hit the cross trainer for just 15 minutes before your yoga session so you get the best of both worlds.
Getting physically fit is about more than just burning calories and yoga is a great place to start.
