Exercise with Your Other Half to Keep Fitness on Track

Thursday, 17 February 2011 15:22:27 Europe/London

February tends to be the month when most of us ditch our fitness routine that we started up in on 2nd January. But there is a way that you can stay motivated for longer.

Fitness experts have found that couples who exercise together, stay motivated longer compared to when exercising alone.

Couples are trying out a wide variety of fitness activities from simply just going to the gym to adventure sports to even attending yoga classes together.

Exercising as a couple to bond better but also helps them to become more motivated which means they maximise time spent on fitness. The only disadvantage to exercising in a couple is when one is fitter than the other. When there is a difference in fitness levels, they tend to stop working out together.

People who exercise with their other halves are successful in sticking to their fitness routine because they try to impress one another as well as trying to out do one another.

Fitness experts are also seeing a growing trend in couples taking up dancing classes due to the rise and popularity of TV shows such as ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and ‘Dancing with the Stars’ apart from the fitness factor, it creates more bonding time between the two.

Long walks and trekking is common adventure and fitness works wonders with couples. Trekking is an easy way to loose calories and it is very effective way of toning up.

Teacher and Pupils Break Treadmill World Record

Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:25:15 Europe/London

A teacher and 11 pupils from Oxford have gained a Guinness world record for running 100 miles on a treadmill in just 8 hours and 23 minutes.

Paul Fernandez and his biology pupils from Radley College, Oxford, smashed the original record of 9 hours and 5 minutes.

Each member of the 12-man team each took turn to run each of the 100 miles on the treadmills in the school’s gym.

Mr. Fernandez, 36, already held a handful of Guinness world records, including one for the fastest marathon dressed as a clown after he ran the Gloucester Marathon in two hours 50 minutes in 2009.

He said: “I have four world records myself and I was trying to find something the boys here could do.

“They trained and worked hard and got a good team bond. It just shows what you can do with a lot of preparation and a detailed plan.

The team managed to raise an impressive £3,500 for charity. The money will be divided between MacMillan Cancer Support, Helen and Douglas House in Oxford, Ace Africa, and the Radley Armed Forces Fund, providing bursaries for the children of troops.

Elton John an Active Dad in His 60's

Thursday, 10 February 2011 13:18:19 Europe/London

Amid claims that he was too old to become a father at the ripened age of 63, Sir Elton John has announced in his interview with the Daily Telegraph that he feels like he is “60 going on 40. I’m young at heart. I work hard, and I do more shows now then I ever did before.”

The singer said that he will play football and tennis with his son Zachary as he is still a fit and active man, but insisted that he will leave most of the physical exercise to his partner David Furnish, who his 15 years younger his junior.

48-year-old Furnish was snapped last week making his way into his local gym, in a bid to stay in shape and gain extra energy to help him care for Zachary. The former director looked in fantastic shape, showing off his toned legs in an exceedingly short pair of gym shorts.

Elton John and David Furnish became fathers to Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John on Christmas Day 2010 after the baby was born via a surrogate. It is still unknown which man fathered Zachary.

In the attempt to regain the formula 1 world championship title this year, British Driver Lewis Hamilton will be aided by a top class personal trainer.

McLaren has appointed personal trainer Finn Antti Vierula, to be Hamilton’s full-time trainer for the year. Vierula will determine Hamilton’s fitness programmes for both the gym and at the racetrack to ensure he is in the best possible physical condition for the 2011 season.

Hamilton’s training has already begun with Vierula already putting the young F1 star through his paces, including a training programme at altitude that included snow hiking, cross-country skiing and gym work.

Lewis himself has been regularly updating followers on his fitness progress on social networking site Twitter, posting comments such as “2 put things in perspective, I'm livin n trainin at 2 ,600m - 3, 700m. It’s as tough as it can get. Trained almost every day including xmas n NYE. Burnt around 7-10k calories each week.”
