Martial Arts
Martial arts is a system of codified practices and traditions of training for combat. There are many different forms of Martial Arts but all have a very similar objective: defend oneself or others from physical threat.
The many different forms of martial artsvary widely, with many focusing on a specific area or a series of areas. Each different type of fighting can be broadly grouped into areas focusing on strikes, grappling, or weapons training.
Martial arts has crossed over into sports. Today certain forms of sparring have become competitive, becoming a sport. The major combat sports are now featured in the Summer Olympics Games, sports including judo, taekwondo, western archery, boxing, javelin, wrestling and fencing.
Some schools believe that competition breeds better and more efficient practitioners, and gives a sense of good sportsmanship.
One of the most popular forms of martial arts is Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). UFC is fought using very few rules allowing all fighting styles to enter and not be limited by a set of pre-determined rules. This has now become a separate combat sport known as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
Some martial artists compete in non-sparring competitions such as breaking or choreographed routines of techniques such as poomse, kata and aka, or modern variations of the martial arts which include dance-influenced competitions such as tricking.
