Commercial Weight Discs and Weight Bars
Weights discs are used for strength training . Generally, weight discs are split into the two following categories: standard discs and olympic discs. Weight Discs come in various weight variations.
In the International Weights Federation the following weight variations are used:
- 25kg: red
- 20kg: blue
- 15kg: yellow
- 10kg: green
- 5kg: white
- 2.5kg: red
- 2kg: blue
- 1.5kg: yellow
- 1kg: green
- 0.5kg: white
Additionally, different plates are used outside of IWF sanctioned competition, most prominently in powerlifting These include:
50kg: green
45kg: gold (fairly rare, typically only used in some powerlifting federations, including the IPA, WDFPF and their affiliates).
Plates used in your home training need not conform to IWF or powerlifting specifications, and can be of any color. Weightlifting plates, which are often termed "bumper" plates, need to be able to be safely dropped from above head height and as such are made from solid rubber. Powerlifting and general purpose plates are made from cast iron to minimize cost. For training, larger 450mm versions exist of the lighter 5kg and 2.5kg plates to accommodate proper lifting position for young and beginning athletes. These can be aluminium or plastic and may have rubber edges.
