Elliptical cross trainers (also known as crosstrainers or elliptical trainers) are a relatively recent development in fitness equipment. Initially we viewed elliptical cross trainers with skepticism until we put several cross trainers through their paces. We were won over. When you exercise on an elliptical cross trainer it seems to be a lot easier than on other training machines, but a look at your heart rate will indicate you are exercising much harder than you think, therefore burning more calories. This is called the Perceived Effort Effect (just in case you wondered what the phrase meant if you've seen it before).

Elliptical cross trainers have the benefit of low impact training. Most of the work on an elliptical cross trainer is through your legs and gluteus (bum) muscles. This means that with regular use, you'll have a firm, toned bum and toned legs too.

Three main resistance systems are used on elliptical cross trainers;

• Permanent Magnet - Manual Adjust (fitted to basic models)
• Permanent Magnet - Servo Adjusted (controlled at the Console, fitted to mid-range machines)
• Electromagnetic (fitted to good quality machines, very smooth and mostly silent)

Electromagnetic elliptical cross trainers cost more but perform better with more features. These cross trainers are quiet in operation so disturbance is low, and you could even watch TV whilst training (some gym standard machines even include TV screens in the console!).

Elliptical cross trainers are fairly heavy. Often they are delivered by road carriers, usually just to your door, and in most cases two people are needed to carry the elliptical cross trainer into the house or upstairs. Bear this in mind when you order your machine. Also, an elliptical cross trainer is usually sold as a self-assembly product. Two-man delivery and installation is included in the price of some of the top models on our list, but we can extend this service to most models for an extra charge.
