Marcy

Marcy Marcy are one of the United States leading developers of fitness equipment, having over 40 years of experience within the industry, which had resulted in them becoming one of the world leaders in home gym equipment.

The Marcy brand was developed by Walter Marcy, a young american who dedicated his life to exercise.

1913: Born in 1913, life changed for Walter Marcyan when on his 18th birthday he was given the money to buy his first barbell and weight set. From this moment on Marcyan dedicated his life to exercise, physical conditioning and agility.

1932: He began competitive weight lifting at 19, winning the 165lbs class in the Illinois Championship and going on to many interstate titles and setting new records along the way.

1935: During the years of the great depression, Marcyan and friends developed a number of strongman, hand balancing and adagio routines - The Three Sizes.

1946: Officially founded in 1946, Marcy Gymnasium Equipment began production. Never one to rest on his laurels, 1946 also saw the opening of the first of seven, Los Angeles ‘House Of Health’ gyms. A visionary, Marcyan was the first gym owner to provide personal trainers to assist members and provided the first full amenity gym – creating the blueprint for the modern day health club.

1948: After the war Marcyan continued training for competitive training rather then bodybuilding but still entered and was placed 6th in the Mr USA competition.

1959: In 1959 Marcyan introduced the ‘Master Gym’ with patented ‘Automatic Barbell’ - offering dozens of exercises, the convenience of pin weight selection and safety in a compact unit. Constantly innovating, Marcyan would go on to introduce the first compact multi-station weight machine that fits easily into the
’average' size room, the ‘All In One’.

1960: In 1960 he began publishing Physical Power Magazine. An early advocate, he was one of the pioneers who helped convince athletes they could substantially improve their athletic performance through weight training. Marcyan laid the groundwork for future physical fitness programmes in schools throughout the USA.

1970: Numerous inventions followed that elevated the market in home equipment and popularised the home ‘multigym’ workout amongst fitness enthusiasts worldwide, and led Marcy fitness products to its position as leader in home gym equipment throughout the late 1970’s and 1980’s.

1972: In 1972 Marcyan agreed to ship one of his circuit training machines to Kowloon, Hong Kong. Here it was to be utilised by legendary martial artist Bruce Lee to sculpt the most iconic physique in film history - exhibited later that year in Enter The Dragon.

The cornerstone of Marcy’s success as a fitness brand, and the reason Lee was so attracted to the Marcy Circuit Trainer was that the workout stations of the machine were developed by kinesiologists and exercise physiologists for the express purpose of training each muscle group for a functional purpose. Or as Lee himself put it, the circuit trainer allowed him to “express” his total fitness.
