Chess
Chess is a board game played between two players. Chess is played on a square board (a chessboard) which is checkered board with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. In a game of chess each player has control of sixteen chess pieces, which include: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, 8 pawns
In a game of chess white pieces are always moved first. Once the first move had been played, the players alternately move one piece at a time. Pieces are moved to either an unoccupied square, or one occupied by an opponent's piece, capturing it and removing it from play.
In chess each chess piece has its on movement rules:
- The king moves onto one square in any direction, including diagonally. A player may not make any move which allows the king to be captured, or this will result in a checkmate.
- The rook can move any number of squares, but cannot move over other pieces.
- The bishop can move any number of squares diagonally, but cannot leap over other pieces.
- The queen has the powers of both the rook and bishop and can move any number of squares or diagonal, but cannot move over other pieces.
- The knight is the only piece which can move over other pieces.
- The pawn moves one square forward. The only way a pawn may capture is by moving one square diagonally forward.
