Description

Snooker and Pool

Snooker is the worlds most practiced cue sport. It is played on a large green baize covered table with pockets in each of the four corners and in the middle of each of the long side cushions. A regular (full-size) table is 12 ft × 6 ft (3.7 m × 1.8 m). It is played using a cue and 22 snooker balls, one white ball (the cue ball), 15 red balls worth one point each, a yellow ball (2 points), a green ball (3 points), a brown ball(4 points), a blue ball (5 points), a pink ball (6 points) and black ball (7points).

A player wins a frame of snooker by scoring more points than the opponent, using the cue ball to the red and coloured balls. A player wins a match when a certain number of frames have been won.

If you are looking to get fit then unfortunately snooker isn’t the best sport, but if you are looking for a technical and competitive sport then snooker maybe the sport for you. Snooker requires a huge amount of concentration, as each shot progresses the player towards winning a frame. Good hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness is vital in order to pot balls and control cue ball. Although many different muscles are involved in playing snooker, these are in the arms and torso. Snooker requires great control in terms of judgment and muscle control are required.

Snooker is a great activity for those who are looking for a low impact sport or for those who are recovering from injury. It is extremely rare that snooker players sustain injuries though, as with any repetitive sport, there is a risk of repetitive compound injury - the hips, back, elbows, shoulders and, particularly, neck are most vulnerable.

Snooker is also very cost effective sport. Stephen Hendry won seven world titles with a cue that cost £40. A top of the range cue will cost about £500, but a good quality one can be bought for £100. Club membership is usually only around £10 a year.
