Table tennis bats are laminated wooden bats covered with rubber on one or two sides depending on the grip of the player. A table tennis bat is also commonly known as a paddle, blade or a bat depending on where in the world the game is being played.

Table tennis bats have different types of surfaces, each different surface provides various levels of spin or speed. On a table tennis bat both sides of the bat can have different surfaces. On one side of the bat a player may have a rubber surface which will provide spin and one side that provides no spin on the other side of the bat. By flipping side of the bat during play, different types of returns are possible. To help a player distinguish between different types of rubber used by his opposing player, international rules specify that one side must be red while the other side must be black.
