Weightlifting Bars

Description

Weightlifting Bars

Most Weightlifting Bars that are sold in the UK are either 1 inch diameter (referred to as Standard Weightlifting Bars) or 2 inch diameter Olympic bars.

The diameter size relates to the size of the hole in the Weight Plates which will fit these bars. Olympic Weightlifting Bars have 2 inch diameter sleeves on either end; each sleeve is mounted on bearings which allows the sleeve, and weight discs when loaded on to it, to revolve with minimum friction. This is particularly important when Olympic lifts are performed; watch closely and you will see that Olympic Weightlifters turn the bar as they lift the weight upwards.

For average fitness training, unless doing exercises like bicep curling or tricep pressing, this benefit of using an Olympic bar is not always required, but it has to be said that most trainers prefer the feel of Olympic Barbells once they are used to them.

These days the majority of Standard 1 inch diameter Dumbell and Barbell Bars have threaded ends with collars which spin down the length of the bar to trap the Weight Plate in place. This is a very safe system. Whilst the collar may sometimes move slightly away from the Weight Plate whilst the exercise is being performed causing the Weights to rattle they Barbell or Dumbell remains safe as the threading and collar prevent the Weights from actually sliding off the bar, which did sometimes happen when the older type of plain steel bars were in common use employing collars which were tightened on with wing nuts. This old system was particularly hazardous when using Dumbells.

Dumbell Bars are commonly available in two lengths, 14 inches and 16 inches., though the former is by far the most popular. Slightly longer Dumbell Bars become difficult to use when performing exercises where the Dumbell is held close to the body as in Biceps Curls.

Weightlifting Barbell Bars are supplied mainly in three lengths; 5ft, 6ft and 7ft. The most commonly selected length for Standard Barbell Kits is 6ft, and the most common Olympic size is 7ft, though ultimately it will be the space you have available which will determine which Weightlifting Bar you buy.

When buying your Weightlifting Bar make sure it will fit any Weight Bench you have, as well as fit in room.

Also be aware that some stores sell Weights Bars which are more common in Europe These are 30mm in diameter (greater than 1 inch) and will fit any 1 inch diameter Standard Weight Plates you may already own.
